Penrhyn Castle Pear
History & Discovery
The origins of this pear are unknown. The two known trees are both a hundred and twenty (approx.) years old espaliers by the entrance to the old head gardener's lodge at Penrhyn Castle. Perhaps they were bred by him. Of all the hundreds of trained trees that were originally in the gardens of Penrhyn, these two trees are by far in the best with regards to both health and flavour.
A mid-season pear. Pick in October and will keep for about a month. The fruits are pale green, and then change to yellow with a lovely golden-red flush. Large and very juicy.
Pollination group B/C, possibly self-fertile

All fruit trees are grafted onto rootstocks. The rootstocks determine eventual tree size.
Bigger trees are more robust & produce more fruit, but take up more space.
Always choose a bigger rootstock if you need extra anchorage or your soil is in poor (very wet, dry or rocky). Small trees cannot compete with grass and weeds.
Select your rootstock by using the paypal button corresponding to the eventual size of tree you desire. You will have the option to select the number of trees you wish to order on the Paypal page.
